Bangladesh Awakening - How Hunger can be overcome

One of the most beautifully shot films about issues of poverty that I’ve seen, Bangladesh Awakening tells the story of Bangladesh over the past 40 years, on their journey from chronic hunger to self-sufficiency.

Filmed by the International Food Policy Research Institute, it captures what is possible when it comes to fighting hunger – outlining how Bangladesh has tripled rice production. And, even more importantly, it links these back up to what happens when people have food security – across education, the empowerment of women, and the vitality of a whole economy.
As I watch this, I see what’s possible, but also what still remains to be done. Bangladesh and most of Asia have experienced a green revolution – they’re growing a lot more food than they were a generation ago.
But, that just hasn’t happened in Africa – for some of the reasons outlined previously here and here.

It was a real thrill to shoot this for IFPRI and the government of Bangladesh. Quite an experience!
